May 2019 Cyber Security Seminar

A great turnout was achieved at our Cyber Security Seminar on Thursday, May 23rd at Walker’s Bluff. Together with WatchGuard and ID Agent, we were able to discuss with local business owners and managers the importance of protection against cyber crime and the Dark Web.

.

Approximately 58% of cyber attack victims are SMBs, and 62% of those will go out of business within 6 months of a successful attack. At Complete Technology Solutions, we feel it’s our responsibility to make sure that our customers and community are not part of this statistic.

Rick Hannam from WatchGuard started the seminar off by sharing with us the current cyber security environment and the latest threats that directly affect us. We heard real examples of businesses that suffered attacks, how it crippled their company, and how it could have been prevented.

.

We also heard from Michael Pearson with WatchGuard. Michael set up what is called a “pineapple” prior to guest’s arrival. Those guests connected to the Wi-Fi Michael allowed access to. He then showed them how anyone with this $99.00 pineapple device could intercept any information they transferred via the wireless network, including login, passwords, bank cards and more.

.

Jamie Lembeck, a Channel Development Manager with ID Agent, discussed the Dark Web and the likelihood that many individuals’ personally identifying information (or PII) were already up for sale within it. We saw many real examples of Dark Web pages offering fraud and attack services. We also heard about how monitoring the Dark Web is a vital step in securing our cyber presence.

.

The seminar ended with a panel discussion with Rick, Michael, and Jamie answering all sorts of questions surrounding security, insurance, the Dark Web and more. Great interactive discussions were created around these topics. Some questions included:

.

– “Where can I buy BitCoin?”

– “Why would I protect myself from Ransomware if I can just pay the ransom to get my data back?”

.

Dark Web Scans were presented covering all breached usernames within their business’s domain. A majority of scans showed numerous results.

.

Congratulations to Murphy-Wall State Bank who won the door prize of 6 months FREE Dark Web monitoring of their domain.

.

Thank you to all who attended our event. It was great to share this knowledge and information with our customers and community. As small businesses we are largely unprotected from the growing list of risks, threats and vulnerabilities that exist in the modern IT world.

.

We position ourselves at the front lines, protecting business owners, their employees and assets against those threats.
